Germany is considering a partnership with Greece on a future submarine construction program, as discussions center around the advanced Type 212 CD submarines. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, recently held talks at the Crete Firing Range, emphasizing Greece’s role as a reliable partner. Pistorius suggested that the submarine construction could be undertaken in Greece, highlighting the potential for increased defense cooperation between the two nations.
The Hellenic Navy’s upcoming submarine program is slated for consideration post-2030, with vessel selection discussions anticipated following Greece’s national elections in 2027. This potential collaboration forms part of broader talks aimed at enhancing military ties, which include joint training exercises, better operational coordination, and the acquisition of compatible military equipment.
During their meeting, the ministers also addressed cooperation between Greek and German forces involved in the Kosovo Force (KFOR), pilot training in Kalamata, and Greece’s interest in procuring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles. These efforts reflect a mutual interest in exploring avenues for joint military production and training.
Dendias reiterated Greece’s dedication to strengthening its defense relationship with Germany, noting the importance of hosting German forces and engaging in joint military activities. This ongoing dialogue between the two countries underscores a commitment to bolstering defense capabilities and forging stronger bilateral ties.
