The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening ties and strategic partnership between the two nations. This relationship has been built over decades, supported by extensive collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural domains. Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Germany began in 1972, and since then, the bilateral connection has flourished, particularly in trade and investment, which have become pivotal areas of cooperation.
Trade between the UAE and Germany has seen substantial growth, with figures surpassing Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year. This makes the UAE the leading trading partner for Germany within the Gulf region. A significant presence of around 2,000 German companies in the UAE further strengthens this economic bond. Among these are prominent firms like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, all contributing to the robust economic exchanges between the two countries.
Energy collaboration is another critical aspect of the UAE-German partnership. Both countries actively work together on renewable energy initiatives, climate action, decarbonisation, and ensuring energy security. In 2022, an agreement was inked to enhance energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures focusing on clean energy and climate-related projects.
The partnership extends beyond economic and energy sectors, embracing research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. A strategic partnership agreement established in 2004 formally elevated political ties, covering areas such as regional security, economic cooperation, and research. These long-standing cooperative efforts highlight the commitment of both nations to enhancing their bilateral relationship.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient and continues to grow. Both countries are determined to expand their collaboration across strategic sectors, reinforcing their partnership as they navigate the complexities of the international landscape.
