In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Hungary secured three medals at the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava, all in the Greco-Roman wrestling category. László Koppány led the charge for Hungary with a silver medal in the 130kg category. His journey to the final was marked by impressive victories against competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the gold-medal match, Koppány was defeated 8–0 by Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion.
Zalán Toplak, representing the Ferencváros club, added to Hungary’s medal tally with a bronze in the 77kg category. After entering the repechage, Toplak showcased his prowess by defeating Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili with a decisive 10–2 scoreline. This achievement marked Toplak’s first World Championship medal, highlighting a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Another commendable performance came from Petro Zsitovoz, who clinched bronze in the 67kg category. Zsitovoz faced a challenging match against Egypt’s U23 world champion, Mohamed Abdelrehim. Despite an early setback, Zsitovoz demonstrated resilience and skill, ultimately securing an 11–3 victory to earn his place on the podium.
The championships kicked off with the Greco-Roman wrestling events, where Hungary fielded eight athletes as part of a 22-member delegation. The strong performances by these wrestlers not only brought home medals but also underscored Hungary’s prowess and continued success in the sport on the world stage.
