Germany has thrown its support behind Montenegro’s efforts to join the European Union, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighting the country’s progress in its EU accession process. Following a meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic, Wadephul emphasized Montenegro’s advancements and potential role as a model for other Western Balkan nations aspiring for EU membership.
The meeting took place during the Berlin Process in Montenegro, an initiative aimed at promoting regional cooperation and reconciliation in the Western Balkans. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos also participated in the discussions, which included a focus on necessary reforms for EU integration.
Montenegro has been on the path to EU membership for over two decades and remains among the Western Balkan countries actively seeking to join the bloc. The nation is dedicated to completing its accession process in the coming years, striving to meet the EU’s membership criteria through ongoing reforms.
Wadephul reiterated the importance of providing a clear path toward EU membership for countries that meet the necessary criteria and continue to implement essential reforms.
