Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed strong support for Greece’s decision to deploy Patriot air defense systems to the Kingdom, a move aimed at bolstering regional security amid escalating tensions. The deployment, which focuses on safeguarding critical infrastructure such as energy facilities along the Red Sea coast, reflects an expanding defense collaboration between Greece and Saudi Arabia.
For Greek residents like Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, the military support holds personal significance. Both individuals, who live in Saudi Arabia while maintaining strong ties to their Greek roots, appreciate the mutual trust and shared cultural values between the two nations. They believe this cooperation not only strengthens bilateral relations but also reassures expatriates of their safety in the region.
On October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the Greek contingent stationed in Yanbu, underscoring Athens’ commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security. During his visit, Dendias engaged in discussions with Saudi leaders to further explore defense cooperation and address regional developments.
The deployment of the Patriot systems is seen as crucial amid growing concerns over missile and drone threats targeting strategic infrastructure. For Greece, this collaboration offers valuable operational experience in modern air defense technology while fortifying its security ties with Saudi Arabia.
Despite the regional tensions, Greek expatriates remain optimistic about their safety and foresee the potential for expanded cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia beyond military support. They hope that future collaboration will include economic, professional, and cultural exchanges, ultimately contributing to regional stability and stronger diplomatic relations.
