In a recent session of the European Parliament, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation voiced concerns over the European Commission’s apparent silence regarding ongoing constitutional and political changes in Hungary. MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László raised alarms about developments they believe could jeopardize democratic institutions in their country.
The lawmakers addressed these issues during a joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control. They urged the European Commission to disclose its stance on several contentious matters, including amendments to Hungary’s constitution, limitations on political competition, and new measures impacting parliamentary mandates and the autonomy of state institutions.
The delegation underscored that the Commission had previously expressed concerns about Hungary’s adherence to the rule of law, which had led to the withholding of EU funds. They questioned the Commission’s current lack of response to recent constitutional changes, suggesting these developments might not align with European democratic standards.
The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives emphasized the importance of applying democratic principles uniformly across all EU member states. Despite the pressing nature of the questions posed, representatives from the Commission did not offer detailed answers during the hearing, leaving the Hungarian MEPs’ inquiries largely unaddressed.
