U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Greece on Tuesday to engage in talks aimed at bolstering defense and strategic cooperation between the United States and Greece. This visit aligns with the sixth round of the Greece-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, scheduled for Wednesday at the Greek Foreign Ministry, where discussions will focus on a range of important topics including regional security, defense, and energy.
A key element of the talks is expected to be defense cooperation, with significant agreements anticipated concerning Greece’s military capabilities. These include the purchase of missiles and self-protection systems designed for Greece’s F-35 aircraft and upgraded F-16 Viper jets. Additionally, discussions are set to cover support for military equipment such as Black Hawk and MH-60R helicopters, further strengthening Greece’s defense infrastructure.
Beyond defense, the talks are also expected to address other areas of mutual interest. These include agreements on archaeological material, enhanced cooperation between the Greek Armed Forces and the U.S. National Guard, and mutual recognition of seafarers’ professional certificates, which are vital for both nations’ maritime sectors.
Rubio is also scheduled to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. During their meeting, they are expected to explore initiatives to reduce dependence on China while expanding bilateral cooperation in various sectors, reflecting a broader strategic realignment.
The visit underscores the continuing commitment of both nations to deepen their partnership, addressing not just defense but also other critical areas such as trade, investment, technology, and law enforcement. These discussions highlight the strategic importance of Greece in the region and its role as a key ally of the United States in addressing global challenges.
