Iranian wrestlers Fardin Hedayati and Seyed Sohrabi showcased their dominance at the World Wrestling Championships by defeating Hungarian opponents to secure gold medals in their respective categories. This achievement left Hungary’s wrestlers Vitek and István Váncza settling for silver medals after falling short in the finals.
In the heavyweight final, Hedayati overpowered Hungary’s Vitek with a swift 8–0 victory, achieved by technical superiority in just 42 seconds. Hedayati’s aggressive tactics included pushing Vitek out of bounds, executing a takedown, and turning him twice, leaving Vitek unable to implement his strategy or extend the match beyond the first period.
Vitek, who had reached his third consecutive major international final, acknowledged the Iranian wrestler’s superior performance. Despite his previous successes, including a silver at last year’s World Championships and a bronze at the European Championships, Vitek found himself outmatched by Hedayati’s skill and speed.
In the 72kg category, István Váncza faced a similar fate against Iran’s Seyed Sohrabi. Sohrabi quickly took a 2–0 lead after Váncza stepped out of bounds and extended it to 4–0 with a takedown in the second period. Although Váncza continued to fight, he was unable to narrow the gap, ultimately resulting in a silver medal finish.
Váncza, who secured his first senior World Championships medal, attributed his loss to a defensive mistake early in the second period. He recognized Sohrabi’s physical strength but maintained that his own wrestling skills helped him remain competitive throughout the match. Váncza’s silver adds to his collection, which includes a European Championship silver won in Budapest in 2022.
The Iranian wrestlers’ victories highlight their formidable presence on the international stage, demonstrating their capability to outperform experienced opponents and claim top honors at the World Championships.
